Happenchance

Do you ever come across something somewhere in your travels that stirs you to your very soul... that stimulates your love of history, romantic contemplations and creative ventures.

Such does this long forgotten homestead that I pass on many a day, perhaps happenchance or rather intentionally...

The old weathered board and batten siding, gothic gingerbread trim, broken 6 over 6 window panes, overgrown gardens and dilapidated back porch all cause me to contemplate its long ago occupants.

Was she a smalltown lass courted by a handsome farmer lad that wooed her to marry...

Did he write her a poem professing his intentions...

And did she finally relinquish to his passions and fulfill their dreams...

The tale in turn transpired into this make-do pinkeep. Old quilt pieces, woven woolen blanket snippets, hand carved spindle and other bits and bobs were gathered for this piece.

A perfect way to spend a Winter's day...

* Poem published in 1916 from 'The Real Mother Goose'.

  5. How sad that the house has fallen in to such disrepair, it must have been someone's pride and joy once upon a time. What a lovely make-do pinkeep. It looks vintage, I love the fabric you've used.

  7. Love the make-do pinkeep and this wonderful, beautiful post! When I was a little girl, we stopped in a Colorado ghost town, and there was the most beautiful, abandoned cottage with a bay window. I feel in love with it and oh how I wished I knew it's stories!
    Happy weekend, dear Susan!

Can you hear the kids laughing and running around it? Thanks so much for sharing it....I stopped short as soon as it popped up on my screen.

Thanks so much for popping over to congratulate me...made me feel so good :-)

  9. We love the old house pictures, it would be great if structures like these could speak, however people like yourself can speak for them, and you have done so very eloquently on this
happenchance blog. Love your posts and will be following.

  10. Oooo...I love that old house! Actually I love this whole post! I often gaze at the old run down homes and wonder about the times when they were filled with the laughter of families and were surrouned with rose filled gardens. Your quilt creation is beautiful and also inspires the imagination about the young woman in the picture. What fun!

    Blessings,

  12. Susan I love your pretty pin keep...and the story of what may have transpired in this once lovely home. If I might add to the story a bit, I can imaging her stitching little night gowns for her tiny daughters and him milking the cow and bringing in all kinds of fresh cream for her to make sweet biscuits for the morning, and on and on and...
I always do this too...wondering how many happy times a home has seen.
    sending many hugs...
