The Humble Bumble

Flitting hither and fro from tempting blossom to seductive flower the humble bumblebee seems always on a mission…

Guided by some internal instinct which we can not comprehend she makes the rounds tirelessly gathering nectar from all that will give…

So ravenous is her appetite for the golden dew she can tunnel into the base of the flower bypassing the pistols and stamens to quench her desire. Harmless in nature although they can sting their captivating yellow and black hairy bodies have given them the honour of  appearing in Beatrix Potter’s ‘The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse’ as Bubbity Bumble in 1910 and a reference in Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’…
They are indeed enjoyable to watch and amazing on their endless quest for sweet nectar.

Enjoy the weekend…

  1. Isn't it exciting to see the bumblebees come back in spring? I saw my first one last week, bobbing and bumbling through a patch of wild clover that had just begun to bloom.

Lovely post! I hope spring is treating you well - I hear from my Buffalo niece that you're having storms there too lately.... :)

  7. Lovely photos. I plant lots of bee friendly flowers in my garden to try and entice the bumblebees. It's like spring has arrived when I see the first one.

  8. The garden wouldn't be the same without them buzzing about.

  9. I am swooning over the beautiful photos! I find bumble bees intriguing and unique. Although I don't want to get that close to them and get stung, doesn't their bodies look like they dressed in velvet? Is your daughter a professional photographer? Stunning, simply stunning.
